This week, we’re featuring five innovative nonprofit campaigns we love and think you will too!
Colorectal cancer awareness and prevention causes have struggled to receive mainstream attention because of the discomfort many people have in acknowledging and discussing it. The Love Your Butt campaign was a ‘cheeky’ way to invite people to talk about the subject with humor, and the importance of screening. Their logo is too cute to be scary and they have developed a line of clothing that raises money and can help jumpstart these critical conversations.
#ImWithCupid’s Undie Run looks like the most fun on and off social media on Valentine’s Day. Designed to raise money to cure genetic disorder neurofibromatosis, the Children’s Tumor Foundation has taken a scary, overwhelming diagnosis and brought together thousands across dozens of cities to fundraise nearly three million dollars towards the cause. The theme costumes featured on their video are guaranteed to put a smile on your face!
Social media on its own rarely can generate the kind of momentum nonprofits want, but when coupled with legislative meetings and the individuals directly affected by a cause, those social media selfies have created real movement. In an attempt to advocate for key legislation protecting individuals with disabilities’ equal access to employment, #IWantToWork has been instrumental in passing legislation that resulted in increased funding to assist in employment transition services for young people with disabilities. Take a look at their selfies by searching the hashtag or visiting their site.
Social issues can be complex and difficult for the average individual to understand which can create a significant hurdle in converting them to supporters. This challenge was the idea behind #Internet4Schools which took the idea of E Rate Expansion, and instead focused on social media influencers discussing why wifi in schools makes a difference and tagging the FCC. From the initial campaign of 20, parents, teachers and friends joined in to make their own videos and shortly thereafter the FCC expanded the program, using the hashtag started by Alliance for Excellent Education.
Sometimes, the silliest idea amongst friends and a drink can grow into something big – and that’s exactly how St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s Head Shaving Events got kicked off. Since 2000, they’ve raised hundreds of millions and shaved tens of thousands of heads to raise money to fight childhood cancer by challenging people to Brave the Shave! We challenge you to watch their video without tearing up.
