To celebrate the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2019 Centennial, the LA Philharmonic announced a $500 million centennial fundraising campaign. As of this writing, they are 80 percent of the way towards reaching their goal and plan to utilize the funds to “build on its reputation for innovation, advance orchestral music and music education, revolutionize audience development and prepare its venues for the next century.” As a part of the year-long celebration, they released a five-minute movie prominently featuring music and artistic director, Gustavo Dudamel, and several performances and programs that they hope to expand. They also brought back the immediate past two conductors to perform and reflect on how far the LA Philharmonic has come at a special Centennial Birthday Celebration Concert and Gala. As part of this concert, they premiered specially commissioned works and a new piece featuring all three conductors. Lastly, as a nod to the role they play in the city, the LA Philharmonic also hosted a massive eight-mile street party called Celebrate LA connecting the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
