Starfish Impact believes that the relatively newer equity lens in the sector is a critical element of any giving or service conversation. Moreover, as we consider Starfish’s contributions in the social sector and beyond over the past years, we are proud to have incorporated the tenants of equity and its through lines in racial, gender, and class-based discrimination.
And yet, we always have more to learn and more to share with our colleagues, clients, and collaborators. In that light, we’ll be featuring organizations from which we continue to learn about equity and shine a light on their great work in our communities. LGBT Equity
The Urban Institute provides unbiased, authoritative research and insights that inform consequential choices about the wellbeing of people and places in the United States, improve public policy and practice, strengthen communities, and transform people’s lives for the better. Their research on the LGBT community includes reports and articles ranging from repercussions of legal recognition of same sex marriage, to adoption and foster care issues faced by lesbian and gay parents in the United States, to dating violence experienced by LGBT youth.
Funders for LGBTQ Issues works to increase the scale and impact of philanthropic resources aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities, promoting equity, and advancing racial, economic and gender justice.
The Center for LGBT Health Equity
The Center for LGBT Health Equity (CLHE) was created to lead scientific inquiry into the physical, emotional and social health of LGBT youth, adults and families, and guide best practices for achieving health equity for this population. The work of the Center is guided by scholars, community leaders and nationally recognized experts in the field of LGBT health, who are committed to advancing research, collaboration, training and outreach activities that facilitate dialogue, broaden awareness and promote social change.
The Human Rights Campaign works to improve the lives of LGBTQ people worldwide by advocating for equal rights and benefits in the workplace, ensuring families are treated equally under the law, and increasing public support around the globe. The HRC represents a force of more than 3 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. They are building a future where everyone can be free to be their entire selves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress that has been made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. The Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across the nation to deliver a world where you can be you.
America Association for Access, Equity, and Diversity
Founded in 1974 as the American Association for Affirmative Action (AAAA), AAAED has four decades of leadership in providing professional training to members, enabling them to be more successful and productive in their careers. It also promotes understanding and advocacy of affirmative action and other equal opportunity and related compliance laws to enhance the tenets of access, inclusion and equality in employment, economic and educational opportunities. In the AAAED Resource Center under LGBT Issues, they feature a vast list of resources including legal, family, and workplace references.
