While we’re all busy watching Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan create an LLC instead of a family foundation to direct their charitable efforts, there are a number of other nextgen philanthropists worth keeping an eye out for. Here are a few that we’re watching:
Justin McAuliffe, a fourth generation Hilton family member, has taken an active role in the family foundation, managing special projects like the foundation’s investments in multiple sclerosis research. Currently exploring the generational responsibilities to family wealth, Justin is likely to be a significant player in the future of the family foundation, as well as across the national conversation around generational wealth and philanthropy.
Megan Ellison, the daughter of billionaire Larry Ellison, has already begun making waves under her own name. Her production company, Annapurna Pictures, has produced a number of socially conscious projects in addition to several box office hits, which have made her wealthy by her own right. Her father has committed 95% of his wealth to charity, so it’s also likely that down the line she’ll have some discretion over a significant family foundation, in addition to the various philanthropic endeavors she’s beginning to dabble in on her own.
Dustin Moskovitz, a college roommate of Zuckerberg and co-founder of the ever discussed tech giant, Facebook, has actively taken steps in the philanthropic world with the founding of GoodVentures which has emphasized philanthropic transparency and ‘big bets’ such as five million dollar grants. While Dustin and his wife have already demonstrated a serious commitment to using their wealth and youth to continue changing our world, we imagine there is a lot more to come!
Lukas Walton, a third generation Walton family member of the empire known as Wal-Mart, has only recently been publicly unearthed as one of the world’s youngest billionaires. Until last year, it had been assumed that his father’s estate had passed to his mother, but recently reviewed court documents indicated that Lukas had actually inherited a significant portion of his father’s wealth. The entire family tends to be quietly philanthropic, but given that cancer hits very close to home for Lukas, we imagine that he may already be involved in some charitable efforts under the radar.
