Twitter can be a loud place. With 6,000 tweets per minute, it can be a hard place to be heard. But in addition to building a brand and a presence on Twitter, you should be using Twitter as a research tool. We’ve found some amazing resources out there for family foundations and non-profit organizations.
First, let’s start with some useful accounts to follow:
@fdncenter – the Foundation Center is a wealth of information about grants, funding, and funders and their twitter account is no different. (A side note for foundations, check out their resources for grantmakers).

@LASVP – I’ve been a proud member of LASVP for years, and their account keeps me connected to events in Los Angeles around philanthropy. Plus, they’ve been having a great discussion lately about raising philanthropic kids:
Encourage your children to make a donation by matching their gift. #philanthropickids — LASVP (@LASVP) March 18, 2015
@pndblog – an account from Foundation Center and Philanthropy news digest, this account has very up-to-date news and information about the business of philanthropy, as well as food for thought:
So what do you think? Should major health philanthropies divest from fossil fuel company investments? http://t.co/Hdujtsoh4v

@exponentphil – Exponent Philanthropy’s mission is to empower small foundations by providing them with tools and information. Their tweets are tactical and powerful:

Secondly, there are a few hashtags I have been following that have fantastic information:
- #grants – Even I’ve found out about new grants (and deadlines!) from this hashtag.
- #SocEnt – Conversations about Social Entrepreneurship. (thank you to Starfish Team member Cecily Jackson Zapata (@nonprofitatty) for connecting me to this one).
- #nonprofit and #nonprofits – Conversations across the sector.
- #CSR – Conversations about Corporate Social Responsibility.
- #jobs and #hiring – searching these hashtags with #nonprofit and #CSR gives a great view of who’s hiring. For specific job related tweets from the sector, check out Starfish Team member Adrienne Luce’s (@luceinla) own hashtag #LetLuce for daily updates.
See you out there!
